Reflection on First Two Days

Before completing the evaluation survey questionnaire, please take a few minutes to reflect on what you discovered, what made an impression, how you might have been influenced to think differently, or other evolutions in your professional practice or personal perspective.

  1. In the past three days I have discovered several ways that I can incorporate google drive into my Computer Exploratory courses. As a teacher who instructs primarily in Microsoft Office programs the curriculum (and time frame of course) does not allow for students to explore options outside of Microsoft when creating, editing and enhancing Word Processing Documents, Spreadsheets, Multimedia Presentations or Databases. Documents that can be created in google drive can show my students that creating a document is not limited to Microsoft Office programs. Not to mention google drive is free! Exploring google drive has sparked my interest in finding additional programs and applications that can be used in the classroom at little to no cost that will still align with my curriculum objectives and competencies. I have contacted my school CRS to inquire about signing my students up for a gmail account in order for all of my students to have access to google drive. I want to make sure that I am granted permission to have all of my students create a google account to make sure I do not compromise the VBCPS Acceptable Use Policy and to also ensure to the parents of my students that the student gmail accounts will be used for the sole purpose of my course. I am hoping for the green light!

  2. As a CTE teacher for VBCPS I realize that I have an advantage that a lot of other teachers do not have. Our curriculum and lesson plans are already using the project based design. I have a lot of resources already in place. During the past two days I have learned that I can organize tons of resources online and that I just need to sit and learn/practice using the computer to get organized.
I have also learned how to create some forms to use to gather information that can be used to document what I am doing with my students.

  3. Originally, I was motivated to take this course mainly because it was a free offering. I am so glad I enrolled. I have learned so much about technology that I can actually use right now, and I can’t wait to take what I am learning into the classroom. I thought STEM was going to be another reinvention of the same ideas, but it isn't at all. Jim shared many great technology tools, and I heard helpful ideas among colleagues. I appreciate the opportunity to practice in class using the tools we have been given since I am not that proficient with technology. As a special education teacher, I was especially inspired by one idea. We discussed how science fairs should become science and engineering expos. What an opportunity for so many more kids to be inspired and included!

  4. I was motivated to take this program because I am in search of ways to get my studnents engaged and to think. My students seem to want to be spoon fed the information. They remember it for the short time and as soon as the test is over the set the information aside. After attending the class, I am excited to try the tools we have been taught. I think technology is a great way to engage the students.
